Group Games
Game 1
Charlton Rovers 2–2 Southside Tigers
As usual Rovers started slowly letting in an easy goal, but then fought back with Jack equalising. Rovers went behind again to an excellent long range shot, but fought hard to earn a draw with a late goal from Dom.
Game 2
Charlton Rovers 2-0 Fintan B
Rovers dominated the game, with Fintan hardly getting into the Rovers half. However, numerous chances were wasted until Dom and Ronan finally sealed an easy win.
Game 3
Charlton Rovers 1-1 Pershore United
A difficult game against the eventual tournament winners. Rovers battled hard but conceded first to a well taken goal. Once again Rovers spirit shone through and a goal from Jack earned a draw.
Game 4
Charlton Rovers 0-1 FC Lakeside
A game dominated by Rovers, but strong defence by Lakeside defeated all attempts to score. Rovers then threw the game away be pushing too many players into the attack and allowed Lakeside to mount their only excursion into the Rovers half. They gained a corner which was scrambled into the net at the back post.
Game 5
Charlton Rovers 2-0 Southside Athletic B
A game Rovers had to win to make it through to the semi-final stages of the cup. Rovers again dominated and Jack scored an early goal by lobbing the keeper, before being substituted after being hit with the ball in a delicate spot;-) Rovers continued to press and Dom scored to settle the tie and qualify Rovers as group winners.
Semi-Final
Evesham United 2–0 Charlton Rovers
This a tight game with Evesham strikers outpacing Rovers defence with numerous attacks, and Rovers failing to close down the opposing players early enough. However, Rovers should have scored first as Jack beat the keeper and flicked the ball goalwards, only for the ball to be deflected past the post by a divot. Ronan then picked up an injury and Evesham scored twice in quick succession to seal the tie.
The Cup Final was contested by Evesham United and Pershore United and went to penalties after a 0-0 draw, Pershore winning the shootout.
The disappointment for Rovers was made worse by the fact that we had drawn with the eventual winners. However, we did put up a good defense of our title, playing some excellent attacking football. Rovers won their group and were the only Cheltenham based team to make it to the main semi-final.
